Deborah Martin Adds to Our World Through Care and Concern

I asked one of the people in my practice if I could relate her contribution to the world through her act of kindness. Deborah Martin is a Worthy Warrior and here’s her story.

As in many parts of North America, this summer has been brutally hot and humid in Northern New Jersey. I’m sure you notice workers collecting shopping carts in the parking lot of your local supermarket or mega box store. Maybe the next time you shop, consider what Deborah did and pass it forward.

It was nearly 100F/37C degrees outside, and a worker was struggling to push about 40 shopping carts back into the store. He was very sweaty, beet-red, and very short of breath. Deborah walked up to him and asked if he’d like a cold bottle of water.

“Oh, yes ma’am. That would be great.”

She went into the store, took a cold bottle of Poland Spring out of the display refrigerator, paid for it, and came back outside and handed it to the grateful worker.

Deborah observed that he clearly needed another bottle. This time she went up to the service desk and asked:

“Don’t you offer your outside workers water especially on a hot day like today?”

“Oh yeah. They have cases of water in the back of the store, and they take as much as they want.”

Deborah was amazed as she paid for the second bottle that the manager didn’t think to let her have it for free. Nevertheless, she sought out the worker once again.

He wasn’t at the spot where she left him but after asking a few people, found him doing his job in the parking lot.

“Here’s some more water for you. I asked the manager if they give you water and he said that’s in the back of the store.”

“It’s there but it’s very warm, nobody drinks it.”

The worker downed the bottle and thanked Deborah. With tears in his eyes, he asked if he could give her a hug.

“Maybe this is something I’m getting back for being nice to people.”

For Deborah, it was the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic that things for a moment felt normal. So much of this has been lost.

Being a Worthy Warrior was something that Amanda lived by. You can read about her in the upcoming Being Worthy-A Step by Step Process to Discover Your Innate Worth.

If YOU can make a small, simple yet powerful kind contribution to your corner of the world like Deborah and Amanda, we’re all so much better for it.

Better yet, here’s a great idea.

Find the Worthy Warrior Pledge here. Read it, commit to it, and sign it, you awesome ninja!

If you’ve done or know somebody who has done an act of generosity no matter how small, I will be glad to share it on this blog.

Congratulations Deborah Martin!

Now the rest of you, go out and do some good!
