I wrote Being Worthy to tell the story of Amanda and our collaborative work together to fight her persistent depression over a course of more than nine years. We lost the beautiful, intelligent and fierce Amanda to suicide and sadly, many more die each year.
One of Amanda’s life missions in her 29 years was to make her corner of the world a better place. Ironically, she saved several people from killing themselves by keeping them on the phone all night until they were safe and committed to getting help. Often, she was the referral source.
Amanda was planning to do the Out of The Darkness Walk in New York. She didn’t get to do that, but you can.
The Overnight has people and teams participate from dusk to dawn by walking through Manhattan and seeing our beautiful city from a whole different perspective. In doing so, you will find support and understanding within a community of others affected by suicide. The opening ceremonies will start at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum along the Hudson River in midtown Manhattan.
As this is a fundraiser to raise awareness for suicide prevention and as a Worthy Warrior, you will commit to raise funds as an individual, family or team. There is a registration fee of $50 for adults and $35 for students, military, and crew members.
Being Worthy is hoping to be a corporate sponsor and to provide water bottles at hydration stations along the way.
Thousands of people participate in person and virtually. The people you will meet often become friends for life as they, like you, know someone who died by suicide or struggle themselves with depression.
The Overnight Walk is a truly worthy cause.
You can now register for June 4th on theovernight.org. I suggest going on their site, read the FAQs and consider booking reservations now as more tourists are coming back to New York as it has opened again. Early June is a great time to visit The Big Apple.
